Smoke Break
I’m drawn to the small rebellions and compulsions that keep people smoking despite widespread condemnation. Smoke Break doesn’t condemn—science shows cigarettes are deadly—but it explores the allure of smoking and the role of addiction. These psychological portraits reveal motives: defiance, enjoyment, need, resignation, contentment. Once common across class, race, age and income, smoking is now widely reviled; indoor smoking is banned nearly everywhere and outdoor use heavily restricted. A residue of glamour remains—the theatrical inhale and exhale, watching smoke drift, the primal lure of fire. For some, smoking opens a contemplative pause: short, valued escapes—many 15-minute episodes—cherished by some and enforced by addiction for others. As one former smoker said, smoking “does both” — it neither highs nor calms exclusively but levels mood. Smokers, banished to windy corners, cars and private rooms, retreat there for contemplation or because they are caught in addiction.
