Drawing My Way Home

This ongoing project, Drawing My May Home, is about standing at mid-life, trying to chip through the wall of forgetfulness erected by time and circumstance to confront the past and make peace with what might have been. I began drawing houses as a meditative way of accessing my memories. The more I drew, the more I remembered. Drawing My Way Home is made up of both individual pictures and sets of drawings (often displayed as an installation), where each group is united by a similar color or design, within the whole. Sometimes I use custom ink stamps as a kind of shorthand for naming emotions and ideas. When ICE began invading American cities, the notion of home became instantly politicized. This project has evolved from the purely personal to include pieces that respond to this crisis. Though the promise and bounty of the United States has never been equally distributed, seemingly, overnight, there is no safe place left. The larger idea of America as a haven has been shattered. These text stamps are also a nod to passport stamps and official documents that agents of the government use to grant or deny entry into the country.
